Though is not easy to rank for a keyword, it is not impossible either. And you can get it done every now and then if you are consistent with it.
Ranking for a specific keyword in organic search is a continuous process that you have to take.

This is the backbone of your keyword ranking and before you start thinking of ranking random keywords make sure these basics in place. These prerequisites include:
- A strong website: Long existing websites have a greater chance of accruing authority, and links. It’s also key that your entire site follows SEO best practices.
- A network to draw on: In order to rank quickly for a keyword, it’s very useful to have a built-in network to share new content with – a blog following, an audience on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, email contacts you can reach out to for occasional help with a link.
Do Your Initial Keyword Research

Generally, keyword with good volume has a high ranking value and you don’t want to target a keyword that has low relative search volume. And if there’s an equivalent keyword that is much more popular, you will want to rank for that.

But that may not just be a good decision. Because you don’t want to go for a keyword with the highest volume; those are just too competitive keywords and not worth your time.
How to find the right keywords.
- Choose a keyword relevant to your business you are more likely to rank for keywords related to your business.
- Ranking becomes irrelevant if they’re not driving worthwhile traffic and leads. So target the right audience when promoting.
- Make a list of close variations on your primary keyword.
Check Out the Competition
Now that you have a keyword, is time to do a search on Google and other search engines to see what others in the same niche are doing. While doing that pay attention to the following tips:
- The domains and URLs – Do the first 10 URL have the keywords you want to rank for?
- The titles – How does the title tag incorporate your target keyword?
- The type of content that’s ranking – Product pages? Blog posts? Videos?
- The types of businesses that are ranking – Are they huge brands or new business sites?
- How authoritative those sites are – Use a plugin to check the age of the sites in the top 10.
- Work twice as much as your competitors.
Going for a specific keyword such as long-tail keywords makes it easier for it to gauge the searcher’s intent and the easier it will be to serve up what those searchers are probably looking for. It will help you to easily guess what the person using the search query really want. For example, users searching for a recipe may also be searching for how to cook different household delicacies. Be specific enough as to be the only search result that visitors are looking as to not to come back for another search.
Conceptualize the Content
Have a picture of what you want your content to rank for, by creating a content that will rank for your chosen keyword. So how do you rank for such keywords? Here are some steps;
- Write an article for your website
- Write more blog post
- Through a product page
- An index or directory of links to other pages
- An authoritative guide
- Use infographics
- Video content.
As interesting as this may sound, it is actually where the crossroads meet and it’s really important not to rush at this point. You may just be tempted to create contents that end up not being relevant to what users are searching for. Whereas you are looking forward to posting your first content on the website, the more search engines are busy looking for high-quality content that searchers can benefit from rather than keyword stuffed spam or ads filled pages that benefit only you.
Optimize Your Keyword
And just before you fold your hands to relax now that your content is live on your website, make sure your content is optimized in the process of creating it. You can crosscheck if you aren’t sure of that. It is better to optimize while creating content than applying optimization afterwards. This is where the keyword research you did in step 2 comes in. Input those keywords where you can in the content but not too much so as not to appear like spam. You can add more keywords using the content images by renaming the image to your desired keywords. And now that you have your keyword research done and your content optimized, it is time to push your content out into the world. At this stage, you may need to be careful how you go about this too. Schedule every step of the way especially when launching a product or service related content.
Now your website is live and content visible to visitors, it is time to do behind the scene work by promoting to relevant page and website. It makes more impact if you do some media outreach before the piece goes live. Do all you can to get your content in front of as many eyeballs as you can before it start ranking for the keyword. How to do this? Share your content on social accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and some others.
Use social buttons or widgets on your site to promote independent sharing – Make it easy for readers and viewers to keep the chain going. They’re more likely to tweet or share your article if all they have to do is click a button.
Build Backlink to your website. This method remains a huge part of SEO even though many see it as a daunting task.
